“…people can do anything. You don’t know what people are capable of.”
In the latest episode of the chart topping ‘Inside Counter Terrorism Policing’ podcast hear about the harrowing and heroic moments in the life of a police officer.
‘Jo’, whose identity has to be protected, is an officer in one of Counter Terrorism Policing’s (CTP) strategic intelligence teams where she specialises in identifying emerging trends in the extreme right-wing terrorism space;
“..guides are being shared to do with firearms or bombs. But that might have been one that was always used in the Islamist space. But the right-wing space are now sharing it as well, because it’s not black and white anymore.”
Before joining CTP, ‘Jo’ started her policing journey as a response officer where she experienced a huge range of incidents and investigations, including the most distressing case of her career
She then took a role in prison intelligence before moving to serious organised crime where she pieced together intelligence to bring down criminal gangs.
Her first role in counter terrorism was as a ports intelligence officer;
“I was one of the people that was standing there….waiting for you, to ask you questions about where you’d been and what you’ve been up to.”
The episode concludes with ‘Jo’ discussing her role in the proscription of Terrorgram Collective – an online network of neo-fascist terrorists who produce and disseminate violent propaganda to encourage those who consume its content to engage in terrorist activity.
When Terrorgram Collective were proscribed in April 2024 they became the first online terrorist network to be proscribed, a milestone which ‘Jo’ describes as her proudest moment.
