“I’m having to deal with some of the worst people in society and some people that are planning on doing potentially some really horrific things.”
In the latest episode of the Inside Counter Terrorism Policing podcast hear about the intricate and complex work of an intelligence assessor.
‘Heidi’, whose true identity has been protected, is a Counter Terrorism Policing (CTP) intelligence assessor who shares what it’s like to go from teaching in a classroom to assessing intelligence, some of which she describes as “very emotional and hard hitting”.
“I really do feel that collaborative and team effort all the time, particularly when I started.”
Before joining CTP, ’Heidi’ started her career as a teacher at a secondary school, where she would teach religious education, PSHE and A-level ethics.
Despite her love and admiration for teaching, ‘Heidi’ wanted a new challenge. She applied for a role in CTP and in the episode, she recounts the exact moment she found out she had been successful.
“I got it. I remember just sitting in my classroom thinking, ‘Oh my goodness, what do I do now?’”
In the episode she explains how it feels to find the missing part of the assessment puzzle,
“It’s a bit strange, but you feel like you’ve achieved something because you found that little nugget that’s going to let you do X, Y and Z.”
