Counter Terrorism Policing response to the tragic shootings in Plymouth

The shootings in Plymouth on Thursday 12 August has had a devastating impact. Our thoughts are with the victims, their families and all affected locally and across the UK as the nation comes to terms with the events of last week.

The murders are not being treated as a terrorist incident at this time. There are many factors that influence the decision as to why an attack should or should not be declared as a terrorist incident including ideology, motivation and intent. The decision is always informed by the evidence available.

There will now be an investigation by Devon and Cornwall police on behalf of the Coroner and an IOPC investigation. Officers from the regional Counter Terrorism Policing (CTP) unit, CTP South West have been liaising with colleagues from Devon and Cornwall, but it would not be for CTP to comment on any of the evidence before these investigations have concluded.
